Crayon Initiative

Scout Pack 872 of Highlands Ranch is pleased to announce our Spring 2019 Service Project. We will be collecting crayons in support of the Crayon Initiative between our March Pack meeting March 30th and our June Pack meeting. The Crayon Initiative recycles crayons and provides them free of charge to kids in hospitals. Did you know that crayons do not breakdown in landfills? See their web sites and for more information.

The primary collection point will be our scouts. They will be asking family, friends, teachers, and classmates for the broken, “worn out”, and unwanted crayons and bringing them to the April, May and June Pack meetings. After the June Pack meeting, the scouts will be sorting them by color (date to be announced) before we ship them to the Crayon Initiative. Timing of this project at the end of the school year is deliberate; hoping to maximize the crayons collected and to minimize the crayons going into landfills.

Did you know that most restaurants have to throw away crayons left on the tables? This year we are asking each den/patrol to find a restaurant and get collections periodically from them. See list below for what restaurants are participating already.

Other places that have a lot of “worn out” crayons are pre-schools. Many will place a box and ask parents to contribute.

The last opportunity to support this project is to sponsor shipping of one box. We used flat-rate priority boxes last year at a $18.75 for a large box and $13.45 for a medium box.

We have set a goal of 300 pounds of crayons collected (50 more than we collected last year) and hope that you would help us make and break that goal!
